At the time of Denver's founding, the land upon which the city was built was part of the Kansas Territory. It was William Larimer that laid claim to land where South Platte River meets Cherry Creek in 1858. Larimer named it Denver City after James Denver, Kansas territorial governor, hoping to gain favor. Gold was discovered in the area in 1858 and the population of Denver swelled. A silver rush followed in the 1880's and by 1890, Denver had a population of 100,000 and was the country's 26th largest city, 3rd largest west of St. Louis. Colorado became a state in 1876 and Denver was named the capital in 1881. The founding of the University of Colorado in Boulder Colorado actually pre-dates statehood by 5-months.
